Setup Guide
Get your GrapheneOS device up and running in a few minutes.
01
Power on
- ›Hold the power button on the right side until the screen lights up.
- ›Default profile: You'll see the GrapheneOS setup wizard. Follow the prompts to set your language, Wi-Fi, and PIN.
- ›Pre-configured profiles: You'll boot straight to the home screen with your apps already installed. Set a screen lock and connect to Wi-Fi yourself (steps 2–3).
02
Screen lock & Wi-Fi
- ›Set a PIN or password: Settings → Security → Screen lock. Use 6+ digits. Add fingerprint unlock under Settings → Security → Fingerprint Unlock.
- ›Connect to Wi-Fi: Settings → Network & internet → Internet. Once connected, your device will update automatically.
03
SIM card / eSIM
- ›Physical SIM: Eject the SIM tray (bottom-left edge) with the included tool. Insert your nano-SIM with gold contacts facing down.
- ›eSIM: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Add SIM → "Download a SIM instead." Scan your carrier's QR code.
- ›All phones are carrier unlocked. You can use both a physical SIM and eSIM at the same time.
04
Google Play (if included)
- ›If your profile includes Google Play, open the Play Store and sign in. It runs in a sandbox and cannot access the rest of your system.
- ›What Google sees: your account email, apps you install, and your IP. It cannot see your files, contacts, or other apps.
- ›Needed for: banking apps, rideshare, and apps that require Google push notifications. For extra privacy, use a fresh Google account.
05
Installing apps
- ›Aurora Store (pre-installed on most profiles) — Download apps from the Google Play catalog without a Google account. Select "Anonymous" login on first open. Google can't link downloads to your identity.
- ›F-Droid (pre-installed on privacy profiles) — Open-source apps only. No account, no tracking. Best for privacy tools.
- ›Google Play Store — Use for apps that require Google services (banking, payment apps). Requires a Google account sign-in.
- ›You can use all three together. Common setup: Aurora Store for most apps, Google Play for banking only, F-Droid for open-source tools.
06
Good to know
- ›VPN: If Mullvad VPN or Proton VPN is installed, turn it on for private browsing. Set as always-on: Settings → Network & internet → VPN.
- ›Permissions: Control each app's access to network, camera, mic, and location: Settings → Apps → [App] → Permissions.
- ›Multiple profiles: Create isolated user profiles under Settings → System → Multiple users. Great for separating work and personal apps.
- ›Updates: GrapheneOS updates automatically. Manual check: Settings → System → System update.
